Canberra Civil Unions Rally - 02 August 2008

On Saturday 2nd August 2008 the ACT group “Campaign for Civil Unions” organised a rally in support of Same-Sex Marriage Rights.

This rally was in recognition of the fourth anniversary of the annual National Day of Action for relationship equality. In August 2004, the Federal Government, with support from the then-Labor Opposition, united to rule out the possibility of same-sex marriage. Every year since, citizens have come together to protest the discrimination against the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered community.

Civil union legislation has been an ongoing legislative issue in the ACT and is likely to continue to be so in the next electoral term, both the previous Howard Liberal and current Rudd Labor federal governments are opposed to legislation that has been put forward by the ACT. The most recent spat with the federal government threatening to once again override the local legislation was over the provisions within the ACT Civil Union bill that would have allowed same sex couples to solemnize their civil union with a ceremony.
