Caretakers Cottage Open Day - Cotter Road (Old Stromlo Forest) - 25 May 2008
On 25 May 2008 Jenni and Peter Farrell held an Open day at the Historic Caretakers Cottage on Cotter Road in the the former Stromlo Forest. The Caretakers Cottage was built in 1926 for the then Manager of the Western Creek Sewerage Works.
It was hidden from the road by pine forest for much of its life until the 2003 Firestorm. Though the fire burnt all around it - the house was saved. As a result of the fires and the subsequent North Weston Development the cottage is under serious threat.
The current residents (of 26 years) are under an eviction notice and neither the ACT Government nor ACTPLA will discuss the future of the Cottage.
The cottage has been accepted by the Heritage Council for assessment of Heritage value, but this could take 12 to 18 months. With no Government plan for preservation in place the future of the house is uncertain.
